Substantive Developmental Research Questions Addressed with Applied Measurement Methods

Abstract

The foundation of research rests on the use of rigorous measurement. In the area of developmental psychopathology, these are critical questions that grow out of the use and reliance on reports from multiple informants, including youth self-reports, parents, and teachers. The papers included within this symposium address foundational questions about the structure of psychopathology and how to consider multiple informants’ responses as providing complementary and unique information. Within this symposium, all presentations rely on large samples of youth.

All studies use sophisticated, but appropriate latent variable modeling towards understanding reports of psychopathology in youth. There are foundational examinations of the possibility that biases in reports of youth psychopathology, based on maternal symptoms of psychopathology may undermine relying on their reports. There are tests of competing models towards understanding the structure of psychopathology and begin to examine how methodological choices, potentially about the number and kind of informants may influence evaluations about the models. There are also examinations of utility of individual and multiple informants in predicting longitudinal developmental outcomes.

The collection of studies highlight the need for precise measurement of psychopathology in youth. The set of presentations will also be useful for expanding conventional thinking about these timely issues.
