Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Parenting Young Children: Research Collaborations and International Perspectives

Abstract

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect families across the globe, families with young children and pregnant mothers are experiencing particularly challenging circumstances. In response, this symposium brings together international scholars with unique data sets focused on the effects of the pandemic on young children and their families. Papers presented will address separate but overlapping topics. The first paper includes findings from qualitative interviews of pregnant women and mothers of young children (data collected across five US states). Findings presented will include mothers’ perspectives on how they are coping with the pandemic and effects of the pandemic on their parenting and mental health. The second paper highlights differential responses to pandemic stressors in mothers and fathers collected in The Netherlands. The third paper includes findings from a longitudinal project addressing experiences of young families. This study includes data collected weekly across the United States from over 1,000 households. The final paper addresses geographical variation in COVID impacts on pregnant and new mothers and will highlight international data sharing efforts. Strengths of this proposal include: data presented on mothers and fathers; multi-method data and analytic approaches (qualitative interviews, surveys, longitudinal data across geographic regions); a focus on parents of young children, high risk populations, and pregnant mothers/perinatal care; and positive and negative outcomes – coping, resilience, mental health, psychological stress. Presenters will discuss recommendations for research collaborations and COVID-related initiatives, and the application of findings for working with families with young children.
