Advancing Research, Policy and Programming on Black Fathers: Multidisciplinary Perspectives

Abstract

Despite the contributions of existing theoretical and empirical research, there remains a need to understand the various experiences and ecologies of Black fathers as well as implications for the development and wellbeing of their children. Harnessing multidisciplinary perspectives, this roundtable discussion will highlight current and emerging issues in the study of Black fathers and their families. Specifically, this roundtable panel discussion, which includes leading researchers and thought leaders in the field, bridges work on Black fathers across multiple disciplines (developmental psychology, social work, public health, education). A key contribution of this dialogue will be to highlight cross-cutting research themes in the study of Black fathers and Black men, more broadly; current issues, including both strengths and challenges, impacting Black fathers and their families; the disproportional impacts of COVID-19 on Black fathers and families; and setting a multidisciplinary agenda to advance research, policy, practice programming.
