Session Type: Professional Development Session
The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified significant societal inequality in American society and had a disproportionate impact on vulnerable children and youth. Recent dramatic changes have fostered a growing interest among SRCD members in using developmental science to impact social policy. The Statement of the Evidence (SOTE) is a new publication format created in response to the emergence of dramatic policy actions impacting youth of color. A SOTE is produced in a short period of time in response to rapidly changing social policy landscape. Earlier this year, the SRCD convened a set of writing teams to produce a volume of 2-page SOTEs to address the educational impacts of COVID-19 on youth of color and LGBTQ+ youth. The purpose of the session is to provide a brief overview of the relatively new Rapid Response process and to educate members on the process of completing the SOTE. This proposed panel involves the editor and the 5 lead authors involved in the production of the SOTEs, each focusing on 5 populations: American Indian and Alaska Native youth, Asian youth, Black youth, and Latinx youth, and LGBTQ+ youth. The editor and the authors will provide an overview of the editorial process, the challenges in writing the briefs in terms of content and the time frame and lessons learned. The session will include a period of Questions and Answers with the audience.
