Child development data for secondary analysis from the Departments of Education & Health and Human Services

Abstract

This symposium describes opportunities for secondary data analysis and datasets available from the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services that can be used by researchers to address questions related to child development. Presentations address the benefits of using secondary data and descriptions of data available for secondary data analysis from the following studies: the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B); Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K); Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011); National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES); Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study; Child Development Supplement to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics; Child Sample of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979; Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study; Baby’s First Years Study; Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD); Family Life Project (FLP) birth cohort study of children growing up in rural poverty; National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE); Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES); Migrant and Seasonal Head Start (MSHS) Study; and Early Head Start Family and Child Experiences Study (Baby FACES). Each of the presentations describe the populations to which the studies generalize, the key features of the studies, research issues that can be investigated with the studies, and how to access the study data. The session concludes with information on tools and resources available to support secondary data analysis at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research.
