This roundtable discussion brings together five institutes at the National Institutes of Health to discuss priorities for child development research: the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). There will be ample time for discussion about the NIH application process, the research priorities of each participating institute, and research opportunities for investigators across all career stages (training, early, and established) who study maternal and child development. Each participating institute supports scientific programs that are relevant to the SRCD audience and the boundaries between them may not be obvious. The discussions will highlight areas of overlap between the institutes and points of divergence. In addition, the discussions will underscore priority research areas for each institute as they relate to SRCD members and offer advice regarding the application process, both generally and with regard to each specific institute. Throughout the discussion, considerations specific to trainees and early stage investigators will be emphasized. Altogether, the goal of the roundtable discussion is to encourage the generation of scientific ideas that align with the priorities of each institute and explain funding opportunities at the NIH to SRCD attendees.
