How to Apply for IES Research Funding Opportunities and Understand the Scientific Peer Review Process

Fri, April 9, 4:20 to 5:50pm EDT (4:20 to 5:50pm EDT), Virtual

Session Type: Federal Agency Professional Development Symposium

Abstract

The mission of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is to expand knowledge and understanding of education and to provide unbiased, reliable, and useful information to education leaders and practitioners, researchers, and the general public. This session will introduce attendees to the various research programs and funding opportunities, familiarize them with the requirements of the grant application and submission process, share resources for applicants, and provide an overview of the IES peer review process for grant applications. Through two Research Centers, the National Center for Education Research (NCER) and the National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER), IES supports research to improve education outcomes for all students, and particularly students from diverse sociodemographic backgrounds such as students with disabilities, English language learners, and racially minoritized students. Staff from NCER and NCSER will describe the grant making process, provide information about research grant programs and current funding opportunities, provide an overview of the application preparation and submission process, share examples of research projects relevant to the work of the SRCD audience, and describe the impact of COVID-19 on funded research projects and grant making. Staff from IES’ Office of Science will describe the research grant peer review process. This will include the stages of application processing and peer review, how resubmissions are handled, how peer reviewers are identified and recruited, how reviewers are trained, and what feedback is provided to applicants. An interactive session is planned, with attendees encouraged to ask questions and relate experiences throughout the presentation.
