Session Type: Flash Talk Session
The series of flash talks presented in this symposium identify potential risks and highlight the need for effective early childhood interventions that promote kindergarten readiness among children served in preschool programs in the United States. The talks all focus on children in preschool, with several focusing on the most vulnerable population of preschool children, children from low-income homes often served through Head Start programs, including children who are Dual Language Learners and the children of Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker children. Proximal and distal factors are analyzed in relation to child outcomes to identify important family, classroom, and administrative features that promote academic readiness. Important factors include number of family risk factors, access to social services, parental expectations, classroom age composition, and classroom language and literacy environment. These factors are linked to children’s language, literacy, math, cognition, and prosocial skills during preschool and in the transition to kindergarten.
