Improving Quality and Access to Early Care and Education in the United States

Abstract
The flash talks presented in this symposium focus on efforts to measure and improve access to high-quality early care and education in the United States, especially for children from low-income households. Flash talks address family childcare in both rural and urban areas, as well as community-based childcare, public pre-kindergarten, and Head Start. While some talks examine linkages between interactional quality (such as teacher-child relationships or teacher-family relationships) and child outcomes, others also consider structural and instructional quality. Initiatives aimed at increasing access to high-quality care for low-income children, such as Early Head Start-Child Care Partnerships and public pre-kindergarten policies, are also explored. Collectively, these talks demonstrate the varying ways that quality and access to early care and education are perceived and experienced by children, families and providers.
