Family Context and Child Development in the Global South

Abstract
Most of the knowledge on the role of family in children’s early and later development comes prevalently from high income countries and there is less understanding of children developmental outcomes and challenges for global south regions and countries. This flash talk session aims at filling this gap in the literature by documenting empirically the role of family context in children development as well as strategies for the promotion of their development. In particular papers will focus on a) the role of family structure and parents’ characteristics on children and youth development; b) early childhood intervention efforts aimed at strengthening parenting and child /caregiver adjustment, as well as the importance of early investment in children and parents.
