Global Parenting Interventions: Advances in Measurement and Scale Up

Abstract

Programs that include responsive caregiving and/or early learning activities lead to significant improvements in children's development and practices, according to the latest meta-analysis conducted for the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on early childhood development. How do we measure this impact, though, on parental practices? Calls for scaling up these successfully tested parenting interventions have also multiplied over the past several years. What are the critical elements that help bring successfully tested parenting programs to scale? This series of flash talks will cover the ingredients that go into a scaling strategy for parenting programs, and recent advances in measuring parental practices and training frontline workers to promote caregiver-child responsive interactions through play, given its critical position in the Nurturing Care Framework. We present data from implementation evaluations of programs in Kenya, as well as an approach for building evidence on successful scale up from the LEGO Foundation Playful Parenting Initiative, implemented in Serbia, Guatemala, Rwanda, and Bhutan. By gathering evidence from a diverse set of interventions across the Global South, the series presents the effects of parenting interventions in diverse settings, how we measure these effects, and the factors that can both facilitate and hinder scale up.
