Biography

Eleanor K. Seaton is an Associate Professor and Director of Interdisciplinarity and Intersectionality in the School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University. Dr. Seaton is a developmental psychologist using quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods to examine the impact of racism on Black youth’s mental health and development. Dr. Seaton is the former chair of SRCD’s Ethnic and Racial Issues (ERI) Committee, the former chair of SRA’s Diversity and Equity Committee, and currently serves on SRCD’s Rapid Assessment and Response Strategy (RARS) team. Dr. Seaton served as an associate editor for Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and serves on the editorial boards of Developmental Psychology and Child Development. Dr. Seaton is dedicated to advancing an antiracist culture within SRCD, and throughout the academy in general. Dr. Seaton has a tendency to journal, travel, bake desserts, shop, read, watch movies and dance to Chicago style house music when relaxing.

Margaret A. Hagerman is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Mississippi State University and is a Faculty Affiliate in the African American Studies program. She is an award-winning author of White Kids: Growing Up with Privilege in a Racially Divided America (NYU Press 2018). Her research explores how aspects of children’s social environments—from neighborhoods to schools to geographic regions to the larger political landscape—shape how and what they learn about race and racism in America. Through listening to the voices of young people, Dr. Hagerman’s research also illustrates what young people today think about race and racism in America—as well as how children interpret and understand current events, contemporary controversies, and societal divides. Her research can be found in Journal of Marriage and Family, Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, and Ethnic and Racial Studies, and her work has been featured in a range of mainstream media outlets.

The Next Steps for an Antiracist Research Agenda in Developmental Science

Abstract

In June of 2020, Dr. Eleanor Seaton (Arizona State University) organized and co-hosted a webinar on building an antiracist research agenda in developmental science. Building on this webinar, the current symposium will focus on existing empirical research and future directions in antiracism research. Consistent with the initial webinar, this symposium will discuss empirical research conducted among White children and youth.
This symposium will be hosted by Dr. Eleanor Seaton with Dr. Margaret Hagerman (Mississippi State University), a sociologist who studies the development of racism among White children and youth. Dr. Hagerman will present empirical findings from her research on White children in middle school. Dr. Hagerman will offer recommendations for future research examining racism among White populations with a special focus on issues unique to developmental scientists. This symposium will further SRCD’s efforts to spur a research agenda on antiracism.
