Parents with a childhood history of maltreatment present an increased risk of parenting difficulties including the perpetration of maltreatment, leading to the intergenerational continuity of maltreatment (Augustyn et al., 2019; Assink et al., 2018; Lunnemann et al., 2019). Even though this intergenerational cycle is well documented, research on parenting interventions among parents with a childhood history of maltreatment seems scarce. Using a scoping review methodology, the objective of this scoping review is to document the existing research on parenting interventions targeting parents with a childhood history of maltreatment. Databases searched are PsycInfo (Ovid), MEDLINE (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), Social Services Abstracts (ProQuest), Social Work Abstracts (Ovid), Web of Science (www.webofknowledge.com, all indexes) and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Wiley). Complementary literature includes reference lists and citations of selected articles as well as governmental documents. To be included, studies: a) examine a preventive parenting intervention, whether prenatal or postnatal and b) have a sample comprised of at least 50% parents with a childhood history of maltreatment or of child protective services involvement, or the analyses allow examining results specifically for this subgroup. Studies without original data, such as literature reviews, are excluded, but hand-searched for additional studies. Study selection is carried out by two independent reviewers. Data extraction of selected studies is done using a data extraction form by one reviewer. A critical appraisal of included studies using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool (MMAT) (Hong et al., 2018) to nuance synthesis results according to study quality.
