The mission of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is to fund research to address learning and achievement gaps, improve student achievement, and inform education policy and practice. Through two research centers, the National Center for Education Research and the National Center for Special Education Research, IES supports research to improve education outcomes for all students, and particularly students whose education experiences and opportunities are impacted by contexts and conditions associated with poverty, race and ethnicity, language, and disability. IES also supports a variety of training programs to increase the number of researchers who are able to conduct rigorous and policy relevant education research. The grants funded by these two centers cover a broad array of research, including education and special education research that span the early years to adulthood; education and special education research training programs (predoctoral, postdoctoral, and early career training); statistics and methodology training programs; partnerships and collaborations between researchers and practitioners focused on problems of practice or policy; large-scale national research and development centers; research networks focused on critical problems of education policy and practice; research grants focused on systematic replications; research on the use of longitudinal data to support state education policy making; research to address pandemic-related education issues and learning loss; and other special research initiatives. This poster session will describe the full range of education and special education research programs, discuss current research initiatives and typical funding opportunities, and provide information about the grant competition process.
The National Center for Education Research (NCER) supports rigorous and relevant education research to address significant education problems across preschool, K-12, and postsecondary and adult education settings. Funding opportunities are announced on an annual basis and include a combination of recurring grant competitions and new research programs and initiatives to address specific education issues and encourage innovation in education research and practice.
The National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) supports rigorous research on children and youth, from infancy through postsecondary education, with or at risk for disabilities. Research aims to identify practices, programs, or policies associated with positive student outcomes; develop and evaluate interventions; and develop and validate assessments. Special initiatives focus programs of research and leadership activities on areas of special education in need of more research. Training grants support postdoctoral fellowship programs, individual early career researchers, and methods training.
The poster session will provide an overview of education (NCER) and special education (NCSER) research funding opportunities that focus on learning, development, instruction, and intervention for young children, students, and adults, as well as training for researchers at all levels, particularly those early in their careers.
