For early career researchers, the grant application, peer review, and funding processes at NIH can seem like a "black box” that is both difficult to understand and navigate. This presentation will provide potential applicants and awardees with insight on how the NIH grant process works. The presentation will cover all aspects of the life cycle of an NIH grant including the initiation of a research idea and submission of the application, review, the funding process and the awarding of a grant. A scientific review officer (SRO) from the Center for Scientific Review (CSR) will present a summary of the post-submission grant process including receipt of applications submitted through eRA Commons, assignment of applications to NIH institutes and review groups (i.e., study sections), adding post-submission materials, and the role of the SRO in recruiting peer reviewers, managing review meetings, and drafting summary statements. In addition, a program officer (PO) from a funding IC, NIMHD, will walk participants through the funding process, including the role of Advisory Councils and key timepoints to engage with a PO. The role of IC program staff at each stage of the grant process will be described. By the end of the presentation grantees will understand key steps in the NIH grant life cycle, including insight into peer review, how to optimize interactions with POs, and how to plan submissions with their career timeline.
