Social Inequities in COVID-19 experiences and Child Mental Health: Insights from the NIH ECHO Program

Thu, March 23, 5:00 to 6:30pm, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 2, Meeting Room 251 E

Session Type: Paper Symposium

Abstract

The NIH’s Environmental influences on Child Health (ECHO) Program brings together 69 established longitudinal pediatric cohort studies from >200 sites across the US under a unified data and biospecimen collection protocol. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Program collected pandemic-related survey measures from over 15,000 diverse children and caregivers beginning in April 2020. This symposium focuses on social inequities in COVID-19-related hardships and impacts on children’s mental health. It will highlight the ECHO Program’s capacity for developing solution-oriented findings to improve child mental health across the US.

The first paper sets the stage, describing the sociodemographic and geographic diversity of the ECHO-wide cohort and regional, urban-rural, and socioeconomic inequities in COVID-19 experiences. Paper two focuses on racial and ethnic inequities in pandemic-related hardships and stressors, with attention to the neighborhood structural factors that shape risk. Paper three reports on the psychometric properties of a newly developed Pandemic-related Traumatic Stress (PTS) Scale that captures PTS symptoms in both children and their caregivers. The fourth paper brings these data sources together to examine associations between youth PTS symptoms and pandemic-related hardships and stressors and identifies strategies for reducing PTS risk. In addition to sharing our science, we hope to generate excitement for ECHO Program data among our colleagues, as the first wave of publicly available data will be released shortly, offering new opportunities to understand and address the early life determinants of child mental health.
