Session Type: Conversation Roundtable
Policy at the local, state and federal level are impacting human development in profound ways. A number of discriminatory and exclusionary bills have been passed across the U.S. impacting, for example, the right to access gender-affirming care, the right to speak about one’s LGB identity, restricted access to reproductive health care among others. At the federal-level immigration policies continue to negatively impact families as they encounter discriminatory and violent protocols in order to access refugee status. These policies highlight the ways policy shifts can dramatically alter the context of development and impact the health and well-being of children and their families. This adds to a growing call for developmental scientists to share their expertise in addressing the inequities and injustices in these policies.
The roundtable will focus on questions such as:
· What are the most pressing policy issues with regards to injustice for developmental scientists to lend their expertise?
· What are successful pathways or strategies for relaying developmental science to inform broader social policy and (in)justice
· What resources do developmental scientists need in order to do this translational work well?
· What resources or perspectives are developmental scientists uniquely positioned to provide in these pressing policy issues?
This roundtable discussion will draw from the extensive expertise of panelists Stephen Russell, Ann Mastergeorge, Shauna M. Cooper and Karen Jones- Mason, as well as the collective expertise of audience members to foment conversations to promote equity and justice in child development. Dalal Katsiaficas will serve as moderator.
