Institute of Education Sciences: Funding Opportunities, the Grant Application Process, and Scientific Peer Review

Sat, March 25, 8:15 to 9:45am, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 1, Meeting Room 151 E-F

Session Type: Federal Agency Professional Development Symposium

Abstract

The mission of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is to expand knowledge and understanding of education and provide unbiased, reliable, and useful information to education leaders and practitioners, researchers, and the general public. Through two research centers, the National Center for Education Research (NCER) and the National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER), IES supports research to improve education outcomes for all students, particularly students from diverse sociodemographic backgrounds.

An interactive session is planned, with attendees encouraged to ask questions and share experiences throughout the presentation. First, staff from NCER and NCSER will provide attendees with a better understanding of IES research priorities, programs, and funding opportunities, including how prospective applicants can identify specific research programs and topics that may be of interest. They will then discuss the processes involved in preparing and submitting a grant application, and they will share examples of research projects relevant to the work of the SRCD audience. Next, staff from the Office of Science will describe the stages of the research grant peer review process, including initial application processing; how resubmissions are handled; identification, recruitment, and training of peer reviewers; assignment of applications to reviewers; application scoring; and applicant feedback.
It is our intent to encourage researchers to apply for grant funding to conduct education research that will improve children’s learning, development, and education outcomes, and inform education policy, practice, and future research.
