Fri, March 24, 8:30 to 10:00am, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 1, Meeting Room 151 E-F

Session Type: Federal Agency Professional Development Symposium

Abstract

This symposium will provide guidance for early career researchers and their mentors regarding funding opportunities and priorities for child development research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Through a series of brief presentations and opportunities for questions, attendees will gain the knowledge necessary to pursue NIH funding to support their research training and career development and advance developmental science. The symposium will include an overview of NIH and key grant mechanisms for early career investigators including graduate/medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and early to mid-career faculty. Funding opportunities to increase workforce diversity at each career stage will be highlighted. Three Institutes and Centers (ICs) from NIH will present current funding priorities for child development research and provide guidance on aligning applications with the strategic mission of the IC: the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). In addition, a representative from the Center for Scientific Review (CSR) and IC program officers (POs) will present on the life cycle of an NIH grant application including receipt, referral, peer review and how POs facilitate the process. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of POs and Scientific Review staff. After attending this symposium, participants will have practical knowledge of grant options available for early career researchers, the funding process at NIH, and current priorities in child development research at NIH.
