How to Write and Publish Child Development Research on Non-WEIRD Populations (Organized by the SRCD Asian Caucus)

It has been widely recognized that a serious problem in psychological research is the over-reliance on WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) samples, which significantly threatens the generalizability of scientific theories and evidence-based interventions to non-WEIRD populations. Despite the efforts to promote child development research in non-WEIRD countries and on BIPOC populations, researchers encounter many challenges when trying to publish this type of research in top academic journals. The goal of this Conversation Roundtable organized by SRCD Asian Caucus is to stimulate collective discussions and reflections on the key challenges researchers face both in writing up papers based on studies of Non-WEIRD populations and navigating the journal publication process. We also hope to generate ideas of recommendations for the field to address this critical gap. The panelists include senior researchers with extensive experience conducting and publishing child development research on Non-WEIRD or BIPOC populations and scholars with significant editorial experience handling and reviewing manuscripts at top academic journals.
