Perinatal Maternal Depression: Links to Early Childhood Psychological Adjustment and the Role of Father Involvement

Fri, March 24, 1:30 to 2:15pm, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 1, Meeting Room 150 D-E

Session Type: Flash Talk Session

Abstract

This session examines how perinatal maternal depression is related to offspring’s psychological functioning (i.e., internalizing and externalizing behaviors, emotional development) in children ranging in age from 4 years to 7 years. In some investigations the role of mediators (i.e., paternal involvement, presence of gestational diabetes mellitus) and moderators (i.e., child gender) in the relation between maternal depression and offspring adjustment is examined. The impact of being pregnant during the COVID-19 pandemic was also studied in relation to measures of distress and the receipt of social support. A meta-analysis of the literature examining the impact on parental depression and children’s adjustment is presented with a call for more research that includes fathers in the sample.
