Substance Use Risk in Adolescence: The Role of Emotion Processes and Family Variables

Fri, March 24, 9:30 to 10:15am, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 1, Meeting Room 150 B-C

Session Type: Flash Talk Session

Abstract

Substance use (SU) in adolescence is of great concern, given its links to both concurrent and later adverse socioemotional and health-related outcomes. In this session, studies that examine factors related to risk for SU will be presented. Two longitudinal investigations consider emotion processes, one exploring emotion regulation as a possible moderator of the development of comorbidity of adolescent depression and alcohol use, and the other examining how specific patterns of emotional reactivity differentially predict increases in SU in males vs. females. Two studies focus on family variables, one investigating bidirectional effects between family dynamics (e.g., parental knowledge of youth’s activities, youth’s perception of the legitimacy of parental authority, child disclosure) and adolescents’ alcohol use, and the other examining whether parent-adolescent neural similarity moderates the adverse effects of stressful home environments on adolescent SU.
