The Effect of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Adolescent and Young Adult Psychopathology

Thu, March 23, 4:15 to 5:00pm, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 1, Meeting Room 150 B-C

Session Type: Flash Talk Session

Abstract

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) reflect a broad array of negative experiences for children that may originate within the family. This session investigates the role of early home environment on later adolescent internalizing and externalizing behaviors as mediated by parenting stress and ACES. In addition, two papers examine the role of chronicity of a specific ACE (i.e., maltreatment) and whether the type of maltreatment, the number of developmental periods in which this ACE occurs, and the timing of the maltreatment is related to specific psychological outcomes. Finally, assessment issues are raised with regarding the utility of using objective and subjective measures of ACEs and their differential associations with psychopathology.
