Transitions in Early Childhood: Longitudinal Links to Later Internalizing Symptoms

Thu, March 23, 11:00 to 11:45am, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 1, Meeting Room 150 B-C

Session Type: Flash Talk Session

Abstract

The period of early childhood is replete with key transitions including the transition to toddlerhood and to kindergarten. How children manage these potential stressors have been linked to later psychological adaptation. The first presentation examines whether the level and rate of irritability during the transition to toddlerhood is related to effortful control and whether it predicts later psychopathology. The second study uses biological measures (i.e., cortisol) to evaluate children’s stress response during the transition to kindergarten and the relations to anxiety in this transition. The third presentation examines the role of two temperament characteristics (i.e., approach behaviors, avoidance behaviors) at age 2 years in predicting internalizing and externalizing behaviors at age 4 years, and before and after the transition to kindergarten. Together, these papers provide an interesting overview of intra-individual and inter-individual differences in a variety of variables that are associated with transitions during early childhood.
