Child Maltreatment, Child Welfare Involvement and Predictors of Youth Risk and Resilience

Fri, March 24, 2:30 to 3:15pm, Salt Palace Convention Center, Floor: 1, Meeting Room 150 D-E

Session Type: Flash Talk Session

Abstract

This flash talk presents 4 papers which examine the association between child welfare involvement, and a history or maltreatment, with associated predictors of risk and resilience. The first paper from McCurdy et al. explores the differential strength of associations between victimization, substance use, mental health problems, and school climate for youth in foster care relative to youth in unstable housing arrangements by LGBTQ identity. The second paper, by Negriff et al. examined the child maltreatment risk during the COVID-19 pandemic by examining the impact of the public health stay-at-home order on ED child maltreatment diagnoses and conversion to hospitalization, and describe any potential disparities by age, sex, Medicaid status, and race/ethnicity. The third paper by Yoon et al used data from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN) to examine how distinct patterns of longitudinal maltreatment experiences are associated with adolescent substance use. Finally, the fourth paper also by Yoon et al. utilized data from The National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being to examine the patterns and transitions in resilience among children involved with the child welfare system, and to test the link between caregiver cognitive stimulation and transitions in resilience profiles over time.
