Session Type: Duo Address
How do young people experience ‘race’ and racism in their daily lives? How can these lived experiences be unpacked with empirical methods? In this duo lecture session, Prof. Shose Kessi (University of Cape Town) and Dr. Tiffany Yip (Fordham University) will share qualitative and quantitative methods from their research programs focused on the everyday experiences of young people of color. Prof. Kessi will talk about her work using a participatory action research method Photovoice with young adults as they navigate intersecting stigma, build solidarity, and resist racism in a historically white higher education institution in South Africa. Dr. Yip will share work relating to multilevel and multimethod approaches to investigating the daily-level associations between discrimination-related stress processes and health outcomes. After their presentations, Drs. Kessi and Yip will engage in a dynamic conversation with each other and the audience on topics such as interrogating concepts of race and ethnicity, cultivating resistance and agency among young people, and developing resistance and agency as scholars. They will also share personal reflections on how their own professional journeys have informed how they conceptualize youth development in the context of racism.
