Postphenomenological Research 1: Alterity relations, robots, and virtual others

Thu, November 12, 8:30 to 10:00am, Denver Sheraton, Plaza Ballroom E

Session Submission Type: Paper Session

Abstract

The ‘postphenomenological’ approach to technology finds itself at the intersection of empirical studies of technology on the one hand, and philosophical theory on the other. The central focus of the approach is the investigation of the structures and implications of the relations between human beings and technologies. This session focuses on alterity relations: relations between humans and technologies in which technologies play the role of quasi-other. By analyzing human-robot relations and virtual others, the papers in this session explore new dimensions of the role of technology in contemporary society.
