In this paper, I argue that the rationale for non-computational methods in psychedelic drug research illuminates the effects of digital data on knowledge production. I begin by introducing what I call “the epistemic regime of data:” a program wherein digital data and knowledge are understood to be mutually constitutive. As digital applications continue to proliferate, I state, data is taken to be epistemically authoritative, and the epistemic value of the non-digital diminishes accordingly. A major function of digital epistemology is to discredit non-digital bodies of knowledge, which divests them of scientific, social, and political power. I proceed to characterize the digital epistemology as inheriting certain normative, restrictive features from digital data science, including but not limited to inductive reasoning and probabilistic statistics.
I then briefly overview methodological approaches in current psychedelic drug research, emphasizing that studies which privilege non-computational methods constitute a small but growing movement here. I argue that the justifications given for non-digital techniques reflect a quality of knowledge particular to the experience of psychedelic psychotherapy. This quality, I contend, is incommensurate with that of data’s epistemic regime. To substantiate this contention, I review the methodology sections of recently-published studies which deploy hermeneutic frameworks inspired by literary theory, interpretative phenomenology, and related humanities disciplines. Finally, I explore how non-computational psychedelic science helps us grasp the impact of the data epistemology on STS initiatives and provides proof of concept for counteractive methodologies. I conclude by reviewing my major points and restating my original argument.
