Artificial Intelligence, Algorithms, and the Skill Question

Abstract

Modest evidence has emerged about a decline in both employment growth and wage progress in the middle of the skill distribution for various occupations (Autor and Dorn 2013), and it is clear that gains in the IT era have come predominantly at the low and high ends of the scale. Linking the thesis of skill saturation—a designed predictability of procedure and outcome—to the fact of labor market polarization, this paper seeks to provide a theoretical framework for the analysis of actual and possible changes from the era of IT-based automation to AI-based automation. In the process, a proposal to delink education from the job market is made.
