On June 15th of last year, the Chilean Air Quality System of the Ministry of Environment returned to show the indicators exceeded 2.5 ppm for the city of Coyhaique (65.000 inhabitants approx.), due to the widespread use of firewood for the heating of homes. The consultations for respiratory diseases increase twice as much in the winter period.
With greater concern the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Chile, acknowledged that the city led the ranking of the most polluted cities in the american continent and also worldwide. The causes are mainly assigned to the massive use of wood for cooking and heating (94% of their houses) in a market with high informality that does not ensure the purchase of firewood with permitted levels of humidity and, therefore, the poor combustion of the firewood further aggravated the situation.
In this context, this work addresses the challenges and achievements of being physically involved by people and groups with the atmospheric pollution of Coyhaique from the socio-material tracking of a living experiment that proposes to modify a set of daily practices around firewood and home heating.
To this end, it is proposed to identify and characterize the daily material practices of heating with wood and insulation of houses in Coyhaique, based on qualitative and quantitative tracking of environmental behaviors and reactions to the advice given to the ten homes registered in the public system called RENAM, seen as a living experiment.
The results show us that these monitored houses have maintained habitability patterns where the use of heating is intense, where disconnections are likely and where the remote collective involvement of them contains vulnerabilities and challenges that are connected to wider infrastructures.
