Ordinary Geographies of Violence and Care in “Postconflict” Colombia

Sat, September 7, 9:45 to 11:15am, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Floor: Four, Bayside C

Abstract

Located in the Colombian Caribbean, Montes de María is a region where the complementarities of war and extractivism have resulted in landscapes of widespread socioecologial devastation. In this paper, we pay close attention to the entanglements of violence and care in Montes de María during the last two decades. Based on ethnographic collaborative work, this paper explores the gendered technologies, manifestations and effects of war and peace-implementation. In particular, we examine the role of home, gardens and other intimate spaces both in the maintenance and disruption of a violent territorial regime.
