Innovation Science: Vehicle between Commercial Innovation and Scientific Research

Abstract

Collaboration between academic institutions and industrial organizations is widely spread and politically sought-after. Although overarching objectives of public-private partnerships are clear in terms of promoting exchange of knowledge and technologies for the common enterprise of boosting economic production, micro-processes, which determine the outcomes of exchanges between academia and industry, have received relatively little scholarly attention. Micro-level engagement in science-industry collaboration may provide situated insights contributing to novel understandings of the work it takes to realize new technological solutions.
This presentation investigates the collaboration between tribological scientists and engineers from LuleƄ University of Technology (LTU) in Sweeden and the off-highway mobile segment of the Danish manufacturer Danfoss (DPS). The case offers empirical insights to how technoscientific collaboration is organized between academic scientists and industrialists. Interestingly, the motivation behind the collaboration came to rest upon building technoscientific infrastructures through which industrial standards, epistemics and interests could align and exchange with scientific standards, epistemic practices and knowledge ressources.
