Abstract

Inspired by the legacy of a 2004 Paris joint Science & Technology Studies (STS) conference, this academic exposé synthesizes key work from the discipline to offer context for its greatest challenge – to equitably internationalize in the digital and neo-liberal eras. The work also includes relevant professional and personal stories of colleagues and in particular my personal life and that of my family. These are stories that span time (WW II to the present) and space (North and South America, Europe, South East Asia and North & Sub-Saharan Africa). In combination, this overview of the field and these contextual stories help illuminate, as they help set the record straight on, a little known but very important and recent global science history. The work also explains why acknowledging the historical impact of, while critically assessing, STS is so vital to a better understanding of the past century of human development and its future potential and perils.
