Shaping the Art/Science Field: A Preview of the Handbook for Art, Science & Technology Studies - I

Fri, September 6, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Floor: Five, Grand Couteau

Abstract

These panels present research and ideas from the forthcoming Routledge International Handbook of Art, Science & Technology Studies. The Handbook is organized around the questions, methods, theories, and practices that have emerged at the intersection of art and science and technology studies. The topics range from artworks that critique or complicate the sciences, to interpretations of artworks that draw on STS theories, to discussions of historical moments in which art and science were intertwined. Taken together, they suggest a broad research agenda and a set of methodological questions and concerns that chart the epistemological territory of the art/science field. In many ways, this work done for these panels and for the Handbook invoke the foundations of STS. They ask us to consider art and science symmetrically and explore new ways of integrating the knowledge and experiences they can offer.
