Data Ethics, Data Sovereignty, Data Justice Workshop

Fri, September 6, 11:30am to 12:45pm, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Floor: Five, Grand Ballroom A

Abstract

This is a workshop that complements the proposed 4S19 panel “Activating Context: Data Ethics, Data Sovereignty, Data Justice.” Facilitated by Beth Coleman (City as Platform [CaP], University of Waterloo) and Michelle Murphy (Technoscience Research Unit [TRU], University of Toronto), the workshop is a practicum in which we apply methods of putting data in context (boyd and Crawford; Coleman; Kitchin; MacKenzie & Wajcman; Murphy; Suchman). For the workshop we will use the mobile app “Chemical Responsibilities” developed by CaP and TRU toward applied exercises on making data visible and actionable. The workshop consists of the following activities:

i. Group discussion of data ontologies
ii. Workshop tool: presentation of Chemical Responsibilities app
iii. Breakout groups: making visible with Chemical Responsibilities app
iv. Summary discussion
