Towards Sustainability - II: Exploring Paths for Transformative Socio-technical Change in the Bioeconomy and Natural Resources Management (Agriculture, Aquaculture and Food Production)

Abstract

How can scientific and technological knowledge and the use of natural resources be oriented towards sustainable ways of production and living?
This session aims to discuss several intertwined socio-technical challenges, both from the Global North and Global South: achieving food safety, striving toward the sustainable management of natural resources, preserving local biodiversity, and at the same time fostering local development processes through the inclusion of small producers and the promotion of local empowerment processes.
How are knowledge, practices and interests negotiated between actors? Who is involved and how? What policy and technological models and visions of transitions towards sustainable paths come into play? How do the diverse dynamics of local development take place? What is the role of policies and political discourses on innovation?

Through empirical cases on agriculture, food production and aquaculture and theoretical contributions on innovation models and practices, this session explores divergent trajectories towards sustainability. These involve different network alignments between actors, territories where people live and produce, knowledge, technological systems, available biological resources, governmental institutions, R&D units, policy visions and institutions.
