Session Submission Summary

(Re)generating Dialogues between STS and Bioethics

Sat, September 7, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Floor: Five, Grand Couteau

Abstract

The purpose of this panel is to contribute to the ongoing, but sometimes interrupted, conversation between empirical research in the field of science and technology studies (STS) and the analytical and normative endeavors in the field of bioethics. Questions about justice, duty and responsibility might be thought of in a richer and more complex way when ethnographic narratives and other kinds of anthropological data are brought on into the discussion. As a result of these dialogues, issues and questions can be explored in ways that wouldn’t be possible without that interdisciplinary encounter. For example, discussion about methodological concerns in empirical bioethics might be encouraged by bringing some insights from the STS tradition.
