Previous studies in our laboratory have focused on the anti-inflammatory properties of extracts from medicinal plants. Extracts from several of these plants were found to have components cytotoxic to cultured 4T1 murine breast cancer cells. In this work, ethanolic extracts from 30 medicinal plants, plants previously unstudied in our laboratory, were evaluated to determine the effects of these extracts on cultured 4T1 murine breast cancer cells. These effects were measured using Cell Titer-Glo luminescent cell viability assays. The ethanolic extracts of Cinnamomum verum (Cinnamon) and Salvia officinalis (Sage) were found to be cytotoxic to the 4T1 breast cancer cells as compared to a control epithelial cell line (EpH4-Ev). Work is ongoing to purify the cytotoxic components of these plants and to determine the mechanism(s) by which these components induce 4T1 breast cancer cell death.
