Fri, November 10, 2:00 to 3:45pm, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Ogden, Third Floor West Tower

Session Submission Type: Non-Paper Session: Dialogue Format

Abstract

What does it mean to practice radical pedagogy?

This panel will bring together interdisciplinary scholars who work under the American Studies umbrella to discuss the intricacies, challenges, and joys of teaching from a radical perspective. Panelists will address subjects such as how to balance the need to deliver content with the desire to explore topics of immediate social importance, how to honor the differing political perspectives of students and the critiques they might forward, how to address criticism from administrators and other observers, and how to negotiate the line between political passion and academic disinterest. Attendees will leave the session with a better understanding of radical pedagogy and workable tools for teaching from a radical perspective.
