Abstract

Business regulations control the business environment and establish a level playing field. They are a response to those whose self-interest overwhelms their social interest; however, some suggest that an overabundance of regulation stymies the economy. We propose combining religious-based business ethics development and temptation-reducing fences as a supplement to business regulation. We show how business ethics instills a sense of social responsibility, changing the focus from oneself to one’s community. We then show how three major religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam use FENCES to minimize opportunities and temptations facing their members. Together, these approaches enhance fairness and reduce the need for additional regulation.
