A Case Study on Sustainability Reputation

Abstract

This case study--for use in undergraduate and graduate accounting courses--is designed to expose students to the fuzzy world of contemporary touting about corporate sustainability initiatives and achievements. Using data obtained from the Toxics Release Inventory and various indicators of corporate sustainability, case users are immersed in the difficult dilemma of assessing company statements and "sustainability badges" against the reality of environmental despoliation that comes from firms' toxic chemical releases.
