An Extension to the Theory of Technology Dominance

Abstract

This manuscript proposes extensions to the theory of technology dominance (TTD) in order to refine the understanding of when users rely on intelligent decision aids. This theoretical extension aims to highlight some of the issues raised in the literature with regard to individuals’ reliance on decision aids and to reduce the complexity of understanding the decision making process of decision aid’s users. This study proposes six new factors to the four factors included in the original TTD. These factors include: incentive, initial trust, cognitive style, confidence, explanation, and built trust. The current manuscript proposes that each of these factors interplay with the existing TTD factors and have an impact on individual’s reliance on decision aids.
