Using Process Mapping to Reveal Business Process Reengineering and Business Process Improvement Opportunities in a Purchasing Process

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This instructional case provides students with a business scenario for a raw materials purchasing process and requires them to first create a process map of the business process and then identify business process reengineering (BPR) and business process improvement (BPI) opportunities. To prepare for the case, students receive instruction in mapping “as is” processes as well as background information on BPR and BPI. The goal is to help them identify types of changes to processes that management can make to in order for the processes to become more streamlined, efficient and controlled.
