Examining the Antecedents of Dashboard Utilization and the Consequent Effects on Managerial and Organizational Performance

Fri, January 22, 3:30 to 5:00pm, TBA

Abstract

A digital dashboard is a visual digital display that contains key information or measures necessary to achieve managerial and/or organizational level objectives and is designed to be viewed at a glance (Few, 2005). In recent years, research has shown that dashboards are a key component of an organizations’ management control system, and are associated with organizational strategy and interactive management control (Yigitasioglu and Velcu 2012; Reinking et al. 2015). Unfortunately empirical research has not examined the implementation and use of digital dashboards in organizations. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between task characteristics and technology characteristics, and the performance impacts of digital dashboards, using the theoretical lens of Task-to-Performance Chain (Goodhue and Thompson 1995). The results, based on survey data from 325 middle to upper level managers, provide support for the model and indicate that task difficulty, dashboard information content (information scope and strategic alignment) are antecedents to dashboard utilization, and utilization is directly related to performance. The results have both empirical and practical implications.
