Publication Productivity of Accounting Faculty

Abstract

Given the importance of research publication productivity in faculty personnel decisions, studies have examined a variety of factors associated with publication productivity. However, there is little empirical evidence about the association between career age and publication productivity of business faculty. In this paper, we examine the association between career age and research publications by accounting faculty. Our sample includes all recipients of PhDs in accounting from 1971 to 2000. We examine the publication productivity of such graduates in the five year period from 2001 to 2005. We find that there is a near monotonously inverse relationship between career age and research productivity – faculty who obtained their degrees in later years are far more likely to be prolific publishers than those who obtained their degrees in earlier years of the sample period.
