Camden Collegebound: A Case Study in Not-for-Profit Expansion

Abstract

Camden Collegebound is a highly successful program for inner city youth founded to provide academic and leadership development as well as musical training. The goal is to have the students matriculate into and graduate from college, and to ultimately break the cycle of poverty. As the result of their efforts, a large percentage of the teens with whom they have worked have matriculated into college. The organization has now been offered a $150,000 grant from the State of New Jersey to expand into one of the neediest neighborhoods in Camden. This instructional case provides students the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the operational and budgetary issues faced by Not-for-Profit (as well as for profit) organizations.
