Integrating Codification Research and Memo Writing into Intermediate Accounting

Abstract

Skills that will be assessed on the CPA exam include both codification research and business writing. Furthermore, research has shown that soft skills (such as effective communication) are crucial in the business world, but that many business and accounting graduates are deficient in this area. Therefore, I wanted to both increase students’ awareness of the future business writing and research expectations and give them practice. To accomplish this, I integrated both codification research and memo writing into an Intermediate Accounting course, as part of the students' overall grade.
