Utilizing Excel-Based Case Studies in Financial and Managerial Accounting

Fri, October 24, 6:00 to 7:30pm, Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, TBA

Abstract

Nearly every business professional will say that having a strong grasp of Microsoft Excel will greatly enhance a student's potential for success in the "real-world." Further, students frequently cite their desire for real-life application of the material they are learning. However, how to incorporate Excel and real-life material into the classroom can be quite difficult.

As a result, we have created Excel-based case studies for students to complete in Financial and Managerial Accounting. In Financial Accounting, the case study focuses on the Accounting Cycle. In Managerial Accounting, the case study focuses on setting standards and budgets, and analyzing results using ratios and variances.

These case studies are designed to be completed outside of regular class time, and with supplemental solution videos, instructors do not need to devote much class time to discussing the case studies if they do not have time to do so. The case studies have both practice sections and graded sections.

In this session, we will provide participants with a full copy of these case studies, including templates, solutions, videos, and an instructors guide.

Participants will be free to utilize these materials however they wish in their own classrooms.
