Team Based Learning in Management Accounting

Abstract

This poster session will describe step by step how to implement Team Based Learning in a Managerial Cost Accounting course. In addition to showing the setup and steps involved in using this method, this poster will also show how this method is designed to 1) increase student accountability, in the form of increased attendance and improved pre-class preparation, 2) develop interpersonal and teamwork skills, including develop stronger peer evaluation skills, and 3) improve critical thinking and problem solving skills through the use of in-class application activities. This poster will focus on Team Based Learning pedagogy as described in Larry K. Michaelsen’s 2002 book, Team Based Learning: A Transformative Use of Small Groups, and how it has been adapted to a Managerial Cost Accounting course specifically. The poster will also show how an instructor can easily adapt and modify this method to meet the needs of their classroom or course subject. Instructors can learn how to flip their classroom to promote student preparedness, accountability, collaboration, critical thinking, interpersonal skill development, and constructive peer review. They will come away with specific course structures, examples of the specific elements of this method, and additional resources to adopt team based learning in their course.
