Using Cases to Teach ASC 606

Abstract

ASC 606 is one of the most important recent changes to financial accounting. In order to facilitate comprehension of the complex material and develop other skills students present cases on ASC 606. Students are assigned to teams and each team is assigned a different case. Students are required to use the codification to solve their case. Each team presents a summary of the case and the solution to the rest of the class. Each case may reflect the entire 5 step process of ASC 606 or may focus on a specific aspect of the standard. By "flipping the classroom" each student expands their technical skills as well as presentation and communication skills.
Participants will receive ideas for a different approach to teach ASC 606 as well as cases that they may use to enhance their pedagogy for ASC 606.
